I decided to step up my game this year and make the Christmas presents look prettier and posher. I must admit. I am a gift bag person.  While I love receiving beautifully wrapped gifts, I don’t have the patience to perfectly wrap a gift box.  I find wrapping gifts to be a hassle.  I would rather grab a gift bag and tissue paper and be done.

But this year I have been inspired to give my gift bags a little more pizzazz. After all, just because it’s a gift bag doesn’t mean it has to be basic.

Three gift bags where two are brown and the one in the middle is metallic red. Decorated in ornaments and holiday greenery with green, red, and gold tissue paper, arranged on a white marble surface against a light blue paneled wall.
Here are some bags I prepared at home with supplies from my local Dollar Tree and Amazon.

As you can see, I took some cute supplies from Dollar Tree and Amazon and elevated my gift bags with just a little effort. It did not take me long at all, which is the whole point. We don’t want a gift bag to be time-consuming.

Below are some tips in case you want to give it a try.

Choose a Pretty Gift Bag

You may want to stick with a solid color since we will be adding decorations to it.  However, this is completely your choice.  If you or the receiver of the gift likes flashy colors, then go for it.

Choose a Complementary Tissue Paper Color

You want to choose a tissue paper that has a color or pattern that complements the bag you chose.  This will serve to both cover the gift until it’s time to reveal and to beautify the bag.

Add a Decorative Bow

Add a bow to the handle.  But not a bow like the pick-and-stick self-adhesive bows.  Choose a high-quality ribbon made of satin or velvet.  You should be able to find pretty bows at your local hobby store or online.

Add an Ornament or Accessories

Give the bag a personal touch by attaching a beautiful gift tag, trinket, or ornament.  This is where you can add something meaningful to the recipient.  This can even serve as a bonus gift.

Add Greenery or Flowers

I saw a picture of greenery added to a gift bag, and I immediately knew I wanted to try it.  It looked elegant then, and it looked elegant when I did it. Adding a beautiful flower or greenery to the gift bag elevates the presentation. It exudes luxury, and it’s pretty.

Now you will have a bag that looks like it just stepped out of a luxury department store.  If you are looking for supplies to create your own bag, feel free to shop my list below.
