Easter Celebration Ideas for Christian Families

When I was a child, Easter meant getting a new pastel dress and hat for church, giving Easter speeches, and enjoying candy. We celebrated that Jesus died on the cross and rose again three days later. It was a special day to remember that Jesus died for our sins so we could have everlasting life. I still remember the pageantry, the Easter plays, the songs, and of course, the Easter suits. Everyone dressed up for the occasion.

Easter may not be as formal today, but you can still create meaningful traditions to make the holiday special for your family.

Here are five Easter traditions you can start with your family.

Prayer Breakfast

You can start Easter Sunday, or what some people call Resurrection Sunday, with a prayer breakfast for your family.

  • You can host a nice breakfast before church service.
  • Read scripture regarding the resurrection.
  • End with a family prayer and head to church.

Easter Cookies

I saw the cutest thing at Walmart, Easter cookies.  They were plain cookies that you could decorate.  I thought that was a fun idea that I am considering doing with my son.  You can buy a kit like the one I saw at Walmart or simply make your own.  To make your own, you just need:

  • Cookie dough (homemade or packaged)
  • Icing
  • Sprinkles

Easter Egg Hunt

If you have little kids, or even not-so-little kids, you can host an Easter egg hunt.  You can host one in your backyard or a local park. You can put candy in the eggs for the little kids and money in the eggs for the big kids. You just need the following:

  • Plastic Easter eggs
  • Small candy
  • Dollar bills or loose change

Easter Baskets

I loved getting Easter egg baskets as a kid.  I don’t think much has changed about that since then.  You can find Easter baskets at lots of places.  But you can even make your own.  Some ideas for a homemade Easter basket are:

  • Stuff animal
  • Candy
  • Small toys
  • Basketball/soccer ball/football for sports fans
  • Favorite snacks

Easter lunch/dinner

I remember our family getting together as a child for Easter dinner.  I remember my granny and mama would cook a wonderful meal.  We always had ham and wonderful side dishes. You can have a family meal with your food of choice.  Make sure there are a variety of options so that others’ dietary restrictions are considered, such as:

  • Vegan options
  • Vegetarian options
  • Meat options (pork versus non-pork and red meat versus no red meat)

Bonus Tradition

In Texas, families often take pictures of their children among the bluebonnets, the state flower. Spring is when flowers bloom, making it an ideal time for outdoor photos. It’s a perfect day for pictures since your family is together and dressed in their Sunday best. You don’t need to hire a photographer; your family’s camera or phone works just fine.

Conclusion

Easter or Resurrection Sunday is a holiday that is dear to Christians.  It is a reminder of Jesus’s sacrifice for our salvation.  It is a time of reflection that is spent with the church as well as our families. As with all holidays, we want to be able to look back with fond memories of these celebrations.  It doesn’t have to be complicated.  The goal is to be thankful and celebrate.
